There must be a balance (at least at first) Sometimes the area can prove so popular that you can remove cars for all but deliveries, but many time there is not the political will to do so from the start. Perhaps opportunity to sell traffic calming could be that since cars are moving slower more cars can travel the route and they are moving slow enough to see what may be offered in the stores... Just by forcing them to move slower you have already started to increase the pleasantness of walking in that area. Thanks for the comment :)John in NHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07124328678630889953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2462459039038662858.post-57020791768354976852011-07-17T03:59:26.734-04:002011-07-17T03:59:26.734-04:00Several local towns and cities have begun to reali...Several local towns and cities have begun to realise this and are making walking/cycling easier and getting rid of traffic in their town centres. I'm currently in China, where bikes are obviously a bigger part of the culture. Bike lanes run throughout the city (Shanghai), and the pedestrian-only part of the sidewalks are clearly distinguished by tiled pavers. As a pedestrian, I get extremely po'ed when bicyclists here ride on the sidewalk and not the bike lane, so kudos to you for not being one of those people.

Another thought: bikes get stolen all the time here; in my group of 16 people, 6 bikes have been swiped within the past 1.5 months. Often, people will steal bikes and sell them to shops. You can see bike shops sawing off the locks all the time. Do you think that, if the US does adopt bikes as part of the culture, they'd face the same problem?Oliviahttp://olivenyc.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2462459039038662858.post-65078851509991247002010-03-29T13:50:54.449-04:002010-03-29T13:50:54.449-04:00John, many times there is a bit of plastic stuck b...John, many times there is a bit of plastic stuck between contacts or behind a battery to prevent lights turning on in shipment, I would check that.Jimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15035099994711522667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2462459039038662858.post-28529946877810551842010-03-26T10:06:42.127-04:002010-03-26T10:06:42.127-04:00Enter the General Mills Campus Bike Share contest:...Enter the General Mills Campus Bike Share contest: http://generalmills.promo.eprize.com/bikesforabetteru/
It can't hurt!Bikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12633061850501254599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2462459039038662858.post-17417314640517680822010-03-26T09:33:55.674-04:002010-03-26T09:33:55.674-04:00right then, cheers!
